Advice From Russ | Maintenance | Helmets | Safety

In British Columbia, it's the law to wear a helmet while cycling. And it's just good sense. Be sure you get one that fits you, too. This is especially true for kids. A helmet bought to "grow into" won't protect your child adequately.

When you come into the store for a helmet, a staff member will help you to make sure it fits properly. Here's what you'll be looking for:

The helmet should sit evenly on the top of your head so it's only an inch to an inch and a half above your eyebrows.

Foam pads are included with the helmet to help you size it. They attach inside with velcro. The helmet should feel comfortable, but snug.

Tighten the chin strap and adjust the straps where they meet under your ears.

Try to gently move the helmet from front to back and side to side. It should not slip. Open your mouth wide to see if the helmet pulls down. If not, the chin strap is loose. Look in a mirror to make sure the helmet comes down far enough on your forehead.

Be sure to take enough time to get a good fit. It's for your safety.

Did you know that bicycle helmets don't last forever? Even if you never crash, you should replace your helmet every three to five years. And, of course, after any impact you should get a new helmet. Many companies have crash replacement programs to help you out.
